BLOG #8 - COVID, The BEST thing to happen for hockey

The last 9 months have been some of the most challenging times. Not just for hockey players, but everyone in the world. Uncertainty has become the new normal for hockey players. Seems like it’s every week games are being cancelled or temporary shutdowns are being implemented. Regardless of the current climate, things will change, and I predict a revolutionary shift after this whole situation.

Good times lead to complacent behavior, complacent behavior leads to bad times, bad times lead to revolutionary changes, and revolutionary changes lead to good times. This is the natural cycle in which a majority of history follows. The time frame differs, and the bad times aren’t always in your control but it’s all cyclical.

Seems like every 8 years since the 90’s, hockey has had its fair share of lows. Starting with NHL lockouts in 92, 94, 01 and 12. Now with Covid, youth, junior, and college players have joined the struggle to find ice time or teams that are able to play a season. Hockey will never be the same after this whole thing is over. Is that really a bad thing?

Every time the game has been forced into these types of difficult situations, it comes out adjusted and adapted. These bad times weed out old methodologies. Leading us to where the game is today. Old school rules and tactics like the two-line pass and the clutch and grab were eliminated. This opened up the game more for skilled forwards and versatile defenseman to excel. This has created a more entertaining, offensive game to watch.

Hockey AFTER Covid

What’s around the corner? My specialty: Hockey IQ. The next frontier for hockey development. With players forced to stay at home, develop under restricted settings, and the rise of online development, you will see some of the smartest, skilled hockey players to trail blaze the game in the upcoming years.

Old school style of coaching will find its way out of the game. More individual, personalized development will be easily accessible for a majority of players. The fascination with just speedy players or super skilled players will go to the waist side. The 3rd & 4th line players with tough guys will be able to play bigger roles and be more impactful in games.

The past 8 years has led to some of the most skilled players to ever play the game. After Covid, you’ll see some of the smartest players step out on the ice. Players will be able to play fast without actually being fast. They will be able to make lightning-fast decision and problem solve at game speed. You’ll see countless variations of players. They won’t be focused on being like anyone else, but rather develop their own authentic skillset.

ACTIONABLE INSIGHT - Reflection

Tough times really show you what you’re made of. I’ve learned a lot about myself during these trying times. The biggest thing I learned is how much I love the game. Regardless of what happens, I will find a way to either play or guide others to continue growing their own game through this all.

What have you learned most about yourself?

How have you adapted during Covid?

How have your grown during this whole situation?

What’s your next moves to continue developing your game?
